I consider myself a typical Chicago baseball fan - dedicated, passionate, and way too knowledgable not to have an opinion.  I grew up in the northern suburbs, but, despite having friends and family who were Cubs fans, I was sheparded into being a White Sox fan by Hawk Harrelson, Tom Pacorick, Carlton Fisk and a young Frank Thomas and Robin Ventura.

When Kenny Williams took over as GM of the organization, the city of Chciago saw a first.  We saw a GM who was also a fan.  Do I agree with all of his moves?  Not at all.  However, in every transaction he's made, it's been apparent that he's making moves to improve the team and his vision is the short term.  He believes what the rest of us Sox fans believe - we are close.  One or two good moves at the absolute most is what we need to move into the post season this year (just check out the letter he wrote before the 2005 season started).

In order to appreciate where we are, we must first look to see how we got there.  Does a World Series team simply appear?  They had to be assembled.  This page is about (one of) the games within the game - signings and trades.  They cannot be fully analyzed for several years after, and, sometimes, for several trades after that.  This analysis will appear on every trade over two years old.  To be complete I need to get information from you guys, my fellow Sox geeks, to find out the details of these trades. Look for any questions about specific transactions written in red and, please email me.

The Best Kenny Williams Trades The Worst Kenny Williams Trades
5.
Sirotka/Simmons/Bernie/Williams for Wells/DeWitt 5. Foulke/Johnson/Valentine for Koch/Cotts/Holt
4. Olivo/Reed/Morse for Garcia/Davis 4. Iguchi for Dubee
3. Borchard for Thornton 3. Durham for Adkins
2. Loaiza for Contreras 2. Rauch/Majewski for Everett
THE BEST Lee for Podsednik/Vizcaino/Hinton THE WORST Lowe/Wells/Fogg for Ritchie/Evans
Notable positive mention for the Garcia for Floyd/Gonzalez trade and, to a lesser extent, for the Hernandez/Vizcaino/Young for Vazquez trade. The most noteworthy aspect of this how dramatic the trades are. The big wins are serious huge wins. The losses, on the other hand, not so much. The Sox should've been able to get more for Ray Durham, but the team isn't reeling from the move. On the other hand, look how impressive the Borchard/Thornton trade and Loaiza/Conteras trades look. Bottom line - Many of the bad Williams trades are negligible while the majority of the positive trades have paid big dividends. The jury's still out on a number of them though. We'll see how the Nick Swisher trade turns out.

THE COUNTER:
Trades Won: 19
Trades Lost: 13
Even for Both Teams: 3
The rest are too early to tell

Building the team doesn't start at the start of the calendar year, it starts the prior October. When looking at building the '05 champs, we start by seeing what moves happened in October '04, etc.
